The Kon Tiki Museum – Oslo, Norway

You might be familiar with the name Kon Tiki as the now defunct Weinstein Company released a film by that name in 2012 which is based off of the story of the Kon Tiki. I went to the Kon Tiki museum while in Oslo and on my last day in Iceland watched the film as it was available on Netflix there. Let me tell you the film took a lot of liberties with the historical facts, as most films “based on true events” do.

The Kon Tiki was a raft that journeyed by raft across the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Polynesian islands in 1947 to prove a theory that people from South America could have settled Polynesia in pre-Columbian times.

At the Kon-Tiki Museum at Bygdøy in Oslo you can see the original Kon-Tiki raft.

You can easily get through the museum in a couple hours and it is close to the Viking Ship museum, the Fram museum, and the maritime museum which are all a bus way away from the city center, so you can easily plan to do them all in a day.

And if you’re looking for a somewhat fun and interesting film I guess you could watch Kon Tiki from The Weinstein Company, if you want to give money to that guy, but if you’re looking for the facts watch the documentary that was filmed during the voyage and won the Academy Award  in 1951 for best documentary.
