A couple of weeks ago I read an opinion piece and it has got me thinking. Climate change has been something that has been on my mind since I was a small child. My Mama read The Berenstain Bears Don’t Pollute (Anymore) to me and it struck me. I’ve gone to climate marches, I’ve been taking the kiddo with me in recent years. But how do I continue to rationalize my global traveling?
I keep telling myself I am learning to be a global citizen but experience the local cultural but meeting the people and experience their cultural first hand by spending time with them in their local areas, seeing how they live day to day. It is making me a more tolerant person. I tell myself I am learning about history and culture of cities centuries older than where I grew up.
But I also know if change, real change doesn’t take place globally by 2030 my very own kiddo is going to be in some very deep trouble. How do I come to a reckoning with this? Switching to shampoo bars and metal straws is that enough? Or is there more that I can do, on a bigger level, for instance when it comes to travel? Can can one travel for sustainably? And I mean truly sustainably? Because no matter what we try to tell ourselves planes are a huge factors first and foremost to the carbon emissions problems.
I would love it if you took some time to read the piece that got me thinking and then come back here and leave a comment on your thoughts about it all.
